photographer of the week

For this assignment I chose Cindy Sherman as my favorite photographer.

“The still must tease with the promise of a story the viewer of it itches to be told”

(Cindy Sherman) Cynthia Morris Sherman was born on January 19th 1954. The famous Photographer and film director stepped into the male dominated world of photography and painting by attending State University College in Buffalo, New York. When Cindy started college she started painting then later on changed her major to photography in 1972. With help from her friends Charles clough and Robert Longo she was able to create the Hallwalls, a reputed art Centre and model laboratory for artist (Famousphotographers.net)

Cindy graduated from college in 1976 and in 1977 she began working on Untitled film stills from 1977-80 and is known to be one of her best series. Source of information (www.Britannica.com) Cindy's photography consists primarily of photographic self portraits, depicting herself in many different contexts an as various imagined characters. Cindy received an award this year Wolf Prize In Arts for her work, she also won recognition by being beauty and the brains behind the enigmatic black and white self-portraits of united film stills 1977-80. Cindy's “Claim to fame” I feel was when she chose to display femininity in her films and her representation of female stereotypes for a social establishment. Cindy was known practically for her self-portraits that show social role-playing and sexual stereotypes. My favorite photo that Cindy Sherman took would be a black and white photo of a young girl at a library grabbing a book off the shelf. The girl's face has no facial expression however, the way the light shines on her face and how she looks up at it tells an interesting story in my eyes.
